Couple things that come to mind, your speed setting is too low, need it to be at 6 for any type of correction, the orange pad sometimes does caus hopping but usally on a rotary though. I dont see how it is drying out so quickly, plus moving so slow it is probably gumming and causing the hopping. With it getting very hot you needa large gauge extension cord not a small cheap one or it will cause it to over heat.
