I read the entire thing and there is some great tips and info on this one. Specially when doing a paint inspection, it's funny becuase I used to look at apaint and think...all paints are alike but now after detailing a few vehicles you can literaly tell in what state the vehicle is in by just looking at it.

I agree with Kevin a paint gauge is an absolut must have for all detailers. I can understand why the UK boys and all over the world detailers use a paint gauge before they even consider polishing. I've detailed one vehicle which a section was re-painted and you could see deep sand marks through the clear coat...as soon as I saw that I turned to the customer and asked if the vehicle had been in an accident. With out even knowing it I was starting to develop an eye for such imprefections and like Kevin sais a walk around the vehicle reveals lots to a detailer.
