i would say from my own experience on wetsanding a car (you don't necessarily have to follow) I use a soft backing pad rubber or foam.. to get at even pressure. on the sandpaper side, i don't know what's good for the paint of the boat. i don't know if boat and car paint or clear are the same. try asking the big companies like 3M. sorry not much of a help. but my experience was wetsanding a car.

so my advise- find a soft flexible backing pad for wetsanding for the sandpaper to wrap around to get an even pressure. and on wetsanding, let the sandpaper do the work..you don't have to apply a lot of pressure.
