To get the swirls most people use halogens or a sun gun so if you have either give it a go. You could try using the macro feature (possibly the "close" feature) to see if you can't get the swirls in focus.
Another way to get things in focus that may be difficult is to actually put your finger where the swirls are (I know they might be everywhere but for framing sake). Putting your finger at a point well help the camera focus easier.

Good to know, I hadn't really thought about it, but I'm guessing flat colours photograph well, while flakes need to be taken at an angle I guess.
