some waxes use solvents with a high evaporative rate, which tend to soak into pads, hindering the applying/buffing process. This is usually found in waxes with a high carnauba content.

But if you could keep the pad warm enough to do the whole car, i guess its worth a shot.

All the Zymol waxes I use at work (Creme, Carbon, Ital, Concours, Vintage) I apply by hand. Never used an applicator, and prefer it that way!

some of the high content nuba waxes are just imposible to make wet/soft like some of the more commercial lesser quality waxes (souveran etc).

You need a catalyst like body heat from the hands to make them workable, and they also use some pretty potent solvents which can tend to seep through the pours of an applicator, which is another reason why the hand method is most preferred.

like what TOGWT said, it may be nice to use soft latex gloves to apply the waxes. I'm sure latex gloves won't be able to mar the surface potentially like hands could..

well since my name was mentioned i think i should chime in..

I am now on the fence about applying wax by hand, i enjoy doing it, however it is not alway pracical.

i unserstand thet the solvents are absorbed (this is the whole point of doing itby hand) I have never had an issue however I guees i need to do more testing

so what i tell people (for now anyway) is that if you want to do it by hand then awsom, if not use the heated applicator. som people refuse to apply via hand, so for them heating up the applicator works well...

so i do it half the time by hand half by applicator

Do you heat the applicator every few minutes or so?

I enjoy applying Concorso by hand also. Trying doing it with a pad and it got all gritty and tended to spin the wax in the jar and/or break away in chunks. The Onyx I use an applicator to apply and its a breeze.
