Default Paint Oils?

I was looking at the detail vxrmarc did on the Audi A8. I saw he used Swissvax Cleaner Fluid prior to applying wax. I was wondering what exactly the purpose of this is. I always thought of pre wax cleaners as removing polishing oils to allow specifically sealants to bond better. Same goes for alcohol/ water or Menzerna Top Inspeciton. But the description says it "nourish the paint with its ”heavy” polishing oils."

It also says that it doesnt contain abrasives, but removes scratches and swirl marks. So basically it has oils and fillers? Why are the oils it has in it necessary to put on paint?

Here is something else I heard about paint oils. "The reason for the oils is that they are already found
in the paint, but they tend to dry up, which leads to
the clear becoming brittle. Thus, if you keep it
malleable AND protected (ie: polished and waxed), it
lasts forever (well, almost forever)."

His argument was that using something like a water/ alcohol solution is bad for paint because it drys it up and removes any oils from the polish.

Sounds almost like a glaze to me which I feel tends to feed the paint somehow..I'm no chemist, but if I'm doing a black or heavy metallic..I always use a glaze. I have Menz 85rd coming and I'm gonna try a 75/25 combo of 85rd/RMG to see how it works. I'm hoping it will rock and maybe eliminate the separate glaze step. Time for some experimentation!

I am not 100% sure on this, my memory is a tad fuzzy, but I am fairly sure Zymol HD cleanse used to be made by Meguiar's. (wow a lot of my recent posts have been about them...and I haven't been using them that much) I think they changed formulas when Turtle Wax took over.

That sounds interesting. I dont use a glaze unless the customer wants it. I also dont know how I feel about 85rd. I dont think there will be much difference between that and 106FF, but looking forward to hear your opinion. But anyways, thats a whole other thread.

I wonder if it's marketing gimmick when it comes to a claim of "feeding paint with oils", but who knows. Hopefully someone can clear this out.

Thats what Ive been thinking. But if the UK guys use it, maybe there is some truth to it.

I'm no expert on the matter, but the "feeding paint with oils" may be lagit. I have a friend who owns his own body shop and he has cautioned me numerous times to be carefull with the alcohol wipe down. I didn't really ask him why but every time I tell him that I give the vehicle an alcohol wipe to remove left over polish he always tells me "be carefull with that stuff, make sure it's not to strong and you wipe if off quickly"...mmm...perhaps I need to ask him for some more information on this.

I'll ask and I'll post what I find out.

I think it does have truth to it. There is a writeup somewhere, where someone uses a pure polish on some black single stage paint. I will look for it one class is over
